The Quiet Map: real-time global map of quietest places using seismometer data
The Quiet Map reads 98 broadband seismometers worldwide every hour and measures ground vibration in the 4–14 Hz band, which is typically caused by human activity. It compares each station against its own historical data for the same hour and highlights the location currently furthest below its normal, identifying the quietest place on Earth in real time. The project uses Claude (an LLM) to help build the interface, but the core functionality is data-driven from seismometer readings.
